Sarouks are made both in and around the village of Sarouk in the province Arak of central Persia. 19th century Sarouks were characterised by all-over designs of Herati or Gul Hennai (hennae flower) patterns. In the late 19th century factory rugs imitated Tabriz designs, using high knot count, floral medallions. After the first world war the floral sprays became detached.
