Hamadan is both a city and provicial capital in north west Persia and has been an important city for many centuries with a long association with weaving. It is a collection base for the surrounding 600 or so villages including the village of Engelas. The rugs range from low to medium quality but are tough, relatively inexpensive and defintely marketable. A distinguishing feature of Hamadans is that they are single wefted. This can be identified from the back whereby alternate warps are covered in one row and exposed in the next creating a checked pattern. Distinctive Hamadan designs are associated with particular villages.
