Afghanistan as we know it was established in the mid-18th century by Ahmed Shah Durrani who managed to unite the warring tribes. Before the 1979 invasian by Russia of the 15 million people who lived in the country 10% were Hazareh and Shi'i Moslems. Now many live in Iran and Afghanistan.

If you have seen the film or read the book "The Kite Runner" the boy Hassan is from the tribe Hazareh.
