Heriz is a town 40 miles west of Tabriz in Persia. Mainly carpets and some runners are produced using a symmetrical knot at densities of 30 to 80 knots per square inch. The majority of designs tend to have a large medallion in the centre with penants and spandrels. Allover designs are rarer. Carpets woven in Heriz and the nearby villages may be called Heriz, Bakshaish, Mehriban, Serapi and Gorevan denoting the fineness of the weave. Mehriban and Serapi are the finer, more densely knotted carpets whilst Gorevan is the lowest grade.
