Kashan is a city of north central Persia and has a long association with weaving as during Safavid period great court carpets were woven there. This virtually stopped with the Afghan invasion of 1722 and there was little weaving during the 18th and 19th centuries. In the late 19th century European textiles were being imported into Persia, reducing sales of textiles made in Kashan. This resulted in a surfeit of imported merino wool so merchants reintroduced carpet weaving hoping to emulate the success of Tabriz workshops. They definitely succeeded until the 1930s, a time of worldwide depression. Thereafter, local wools were used.
