In the 2nd half of the 19th century the British/Swiss firm Ziegler and Co set up in Tabriz, Persia exporting textiles, opium and dried fruit and later in Sultanabad purchasing carpets. At the time there was much demand from the west for carpets so they employed local designers to create new designs. These carpets became known as Zieglers and are distinguished by an allover design, large-scale, lattice vine patterns.
