The Bakhtiari tribe derives its name from its ruling family, Bakhtiar. Rugs are made both by the Bakhtiari nomads and those who have settled in the Chahar Mahal villages. The nomadic and village rugs differ both in construction and in design.

Close-Up

Nomadic rugs have symmetrical knots, double wefted and a wool foundation. Village rugs have symmetrical knots, are single wefted and a cotton foundation. The village rugs, as shown here, generally are more formal, typically repeating squares or diamond shaped sections containing flowers or trees. A nomadic Bakhtiar rug would show more tribal motifs.

This pretty rug made with natural dyes is in excellent condition.
