The Mushwani are a sub-tribe of the Baluch from western Afghanistan. They produce very attractive, good quality nomadic rugs. Unlike the majority of Baluch rugs these come in much larger sizes and are among the most finely woven of Afghan Baluchi rugs.
This rug has been woven using a variety of weaving techniques: knotted pile and soumac. In the detail image the stars are piled whilst the surround area of this border is woven using the soumac technique.
