Dirt once it reaches the rug foundation acts as sandpaper causing the pile and foundation to degrade so I recommend cleaning every three to five years to prolong its life. Cleaning is particularly important if a rug is stained as it will be attractive to female moths as a place to lay her eggs and further damage can follow.

Process: In preparation for cleaning a colour test is done on different parts of the rug because some wool dyes may run on contact with water. For very dusty wool pieces the rug is given an extra beat using a machine that vibrates so that the fine dust and any moth eggs fall through the rug onto a steel mesh. Few cleaners have this machine and without the machine they would have difficulty removing the same amount of dust.

Cleaning is also offered for stains such as wine, urine, coffee and water damage. The images show a kilim stained with jam, before and after cleaning. I specialise in cleaning silk rugs which many Oriental rug cleaners are not prepared to do because of the high degree of expertise required. I have had a 95% success rate in removing stains from rugs including silk rugs.

For rugs where there is a moth infestation the process is to give it a thorough beat and clean. Where the infestation is severe and it is a treasured rug, I have it heat treated, a process used for museum rugs and carpets. I would also recommend that you thoroughly clean and use some moth traps in the affected area of your home.
