| Moth Traps | |
The clothes moth larvae feed on a variety of natural fibres including wool so are attracted to wool items such as clothes, rugs and carpets. Using these traps will considerably reduce the risk of these larvae doing serious and expensive damage to your wool items.
The clothes moth is about 1/2" long and silvery brown in colour. The female moth seeks out undisturbed, dark, low-lying areas and is especially drawn to natural fibres such as wool stained by food, perspiration, or urine as they have more moisture. There she will lay her eggs for the larvae to hatch and feed. An infestation will appear as fine silvery-looking threads about an inch long. These are the larvae cases. You are most likely to see them in the summer months.
The trap shown in the image has a sticky pad that emits a pheromone which attracts the male moth and once caught it cannot mate with the female. The pad measures 13.2 x 6 cm (5.2" x 2.25"). Use a trap in every room where you have wool items such as clothes, rugs and carpets. One trap is sufficient for an area of up to ten metre squared. and place it near the floor as these moths are low fliers. Each trap has two sticky pads and will last 12-16 weeks (6-8 weeks per sticky pad).
